I'm currently on holiday in California and I had the pleasure of going to Universal Studios. They have a "World Famous Universal Studio Tour" which has a lot of sets and cool machines that make cars dance and show off things that has been used in the films they have produced. I have been on this 'ride' five times now. Most of these tours have been done in the Californian universal studios and every time it changes and I see different things.
The first time I went there, it was 10 years ago, and they had a part of the tour where the tram takes you into a warehouse that was made to look like New York City and a big robotic King Kong came out at you. Unfortunately there was a fire that destroyed this warehouse but this year, when I went again they had a King Kong part that was slightly different. At first we weren't going to go in the new warehouse because of filming being done outside but by the time we got there they were on a break.
It was very different from the last time we went in and there was one big screen all around us, from floor to ceiling and we watched a video being played on the TV in the tram where Peter Jackson told us that he got a chance to do something in the best 3D experience he's ever done (I thought it must predate The Hobbit as he said this) for King Kong and he got to return to skull island. The video ended, we put on our glasses, the lights went down and the screens on either side of the tram started showing video.
At first I thought it would be the same video on either side but then I saw the dinosaurs on my side react to a noise on the other side of the tram and I saw a T-Rex, on the other side of the room. I quickly realised that the mini film was all around us. King Kong came to our rescue and the tram suddenly started moving up and down, with this added to the surround sound and surround 3-Dimensional images, it felt as if I was really there and even when something jumped over us you could tell where it was when there weren't screens and it felt so real it was the best 3D experience of my life. It makes me wonder what else can be done with this. There are already 3D rides that do something similar but what about feature length films? Imagine going into a cinema where the screen was surrounding you and you could look at the world around you as if you were there and perhaps you could have the option for the seats to move with the movement on the screen. Of course there are people who don't like 3D cinema now, with headaches, glasses and the cost. So maybe it wouldn't get popular, would you want to watch a film like that? Tell me by commenting bellow and we could have a chat. I mentioned a pair of glasses on Google+ a while ago that could evolve in a similar way perhaps I will have to write a post about it on here. Thanks for reading and please share your thoughts below.
